UNDERWRITING DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

The primary purpose of Underwriting is to analyze risks, evaluate the type of exposures that each risk poses to the company, and establish a premium for those risks and exposures. In doing so, we are able to structure comprehensive insurance programs that meet the needs of our insureds at the most reasonable cost.

MLMIC's underwriters are actively involved in all phases of evaluating professional liability risks and they strive to meet the needs of every policyholder. In the evaluation, classification, rating, and selection of risks, MLMIC's emphasis has always been on equity and quality. To achieve this balance, we offer a variety of underwriting programs designed to meet the changing needs of our insureds.

For our physician insureds, MLMIC's underwriters also serve as liaisons to the Professional Medical Liability Insurance and the Defense Board, a committee of the Medical Society of the State of New York (MSSNY), in its deliberations on various classification and coverage issues. Our underwriters work with the Defense Board and its subcommittees (for MSSNY members), and MLMIC's Claims Committee (for non-members), to monitor the claims experience of our insureds through peer review and to interview prospective applicants, whenever necessary. Our dentist policyholders enjoy similar benefits through the operations of the NYSDA-MLMIC Underwriting Claims Committee.
