FDA Fast-Tracks Psychedelic Treatments with Priority Vouchers to Combat Mental Health Crisis
In an effort to address the national mental health crisis, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued National Priority Vouchers to three companies developing psychedelic-based treatments, effectively fast-tracking the review process for these potentially groundbreaking therapies.
This pilot program aims to shorten the traditional 10-to-12-month review timeline to just one or two months for candidates like psilocybin and methylone, which have already received “breakthrough therapy” status for conditions such as treatment-resistant depression and PTSD. The vouchers were awarded to Compass Pathways, the Usona Institute, and Transcend Therapeutics, signaling a significant regulatory shift toward integrating psychedelics into mainstream medicine while maintaining rigorous scientific standards for safety and efficacy.
Perioperative Acupuncture Reduces Postoperative Pain and Opioid Dependency Following Hip Replacement
New research presented by Stephanie Cheng, MD, from the Hospital for Special Surgery, suggests that incorporating acupuncture into the surgical protocol for total hip arthroplasty (THA) can significantly improve patient outcomes. In a triple-blind randomized controlled trial, patients who received intraoperative ear acupuncture experienced lower pain scores and a notable reduction in opioid consumption during the immediate postoperative period compared to those receiving standard care.
Specifically, 14% of the acupuncture group required no opioids at all during their hospital stay, vs. only 4% of the control group. Beyond pain management, the study highlighted that this safe, non-invasive intervention contributed to shorter hospital stays and higher patient satisfaction, providing a cost-effective strategy to help mitigate the risks of opioid use while accelerating the recovery process.
How Modern Apps Use High-Frequency Psychological Hooks to Capture Young Users
This NPR article explores how modern technology apps have adopted specific design strategies from the gambling industry, particularly video slot machines, to keep both children and adults tethered to their screens.
Research by cultural anthropologist Natasha Dow Schüll identifies four key “superglue” features: solitude, bottomlessness, speed and unpredictable rewards, that combine to induce a trancelike “machine zone” where users lose track of time and surroundings. By eliminating social stopping cues, providing infinite scrolls of content and utilizing AI to deliver “just enough” engagement through intermittent rewards, these platforms mirror the addictive mechanics of casinos. This deliberate engineering creates a powerful psychological pull that makes it increasingly difficult for users, especially vulnerable children, to disengage even when the activity no longer provides genuine satisfaction.
The State of Healthcare AI Regulation: States Step Up to Tame the “Wild West”
As artificial intelligence rapidly integrates into medical workflows, from AI scribes to diagnostic algorithms, the regulatory landscape remains largely unmapped at the federal level.
According to Healthcare Brew, while 83% of healthcare workers believe AI requires more oversight, the federal government has maintained a largely “antiregulatory” stance, leaving states to lead the charge. In 2025 alone, 47 states introduced over 250 bills aimed at governing health AI, with 21 states successfully passing legislation. These emerging state laws focus on four primary areas: establishing safety protocols for mental health chatbots, ensuring patient disclosure and consent, preventing AI from masquerading as human clinical providers and regulating how insurance payers use algorithms to deny care. While some industry leaders welcome the clarity that regulation brings, health systems warn that a fragmented, state-by-state patchwork of rules could ultimately stifle innovation and make it difficult to deliver the technology’s full benefits to patients.
