As the lead-in to the Medical Society of the State of New York’s (MSSNY) 2021 House of Delegates, MLMIC and MSSNY are proud to present CME Day on Friday, September 17, via Zoom webinar. The series of continuing medical education presentations, originally scheduled to be hosted in-person, will commence online at 9 a.m. with three MLMIC presentations.

Beyond the Behavioral Health Unit: Managing Mental Health

The mental health needs of patients are an integral part of healthcare, regardless of the practice location. From the emergency department to the ambulatory care setting, the patient’s mental health needs may be overlooked or difficult to identify in these hectic environments. This virtual CME course is taught by Donnaline Richman, an attorney from the law firm of Fager Amsler Keller & Schoppmann, LLP, and Mark Ambrose, a MLMIC Risk Management Consultant. Together, they explore the mental health needs of patients in the emergency department, the general inpatient unit and the ambulatory care setting. The associated liability risks will be reviewed, as well as strategies to mitigate these risks. Additionally, an analysis of the factors that impact claims of medical malpractice will be discussed. In My Defense: The Perspective of a Physician in a Malpractice Suit

MLMIC’s Chief Medical Officer Dr. John Lombardo shares his challenging experience of being sued for medical malpractice as a practicing physician. He details the entire process and its emotional toll, from the daunting moment he received legal papers to the immense relief that accompanied a final verdict ruling in his favor. He says he hopes that normalizing communication on medical malpractice lawsuits will help fellow physicians in similar situations. Click here for additional detail.
