MLMIC and HANYS Offer Webinar on Hospitalist’s Role in Coordination of Care
In June, Nancy May-Skinner, Esq. of Fager Amsler Keller and Schoppmann, LLP presented the 2018 Healthcare Law Review webinar as part of MLMIC’s patient safety collaboration with The Healthcare Association of New York State (HANYS). The free webinar drew over 300 healthcare professionals from across the state.
Enrollment is currently open for the next webinar, “The Hospitalist’s Role in Effective Coordination of Care,” on July 18. This 60-minute complimentary webinar will feature a presentation by John Krisa, MD, physician advisor and practicing hospitalist for the Acute Care Troy Division of St. Peter’s Health Partners. Dr. Krisa will explain how a well-designed and implemented hospitalist program can help physicians and facilities provide optimum care to their patients while reducing potential liability risk.

The primary responsibility for patient care in the hospital traditionally rested with the primary care physician. Over time, various factors have driven that practice model to change. These changes have led to the evolution of the hospitalist medical specialty and the expanded use of hospitalists in healthcare facilities. Effective communication during the coordination of care is an essential element in a successful hospitalist program. Inadequate handoffs have been implicated as a source of adverse events and near-misses in the hospital setting.
As a result of attending this presentation, you will be able to:
- explain the role of the hospitalist in healthcare facilities;
- outline the pros and cons of hospitalist care;
- describe the communication responsibilities of the primary care provider and hospitalist;
- review strategies to promote communication processes between healthcare providers; and
- discuss ways to improve coordination of care resulting in effective transitions for the patient.
