MLMIC has released a new edition of The Albany Report to help policyholders understand the impact of the most recent New York State Legislative session on the medical malpractice insurance market.
In Volume 2, Number 3,* policyholders will find updates to the legislative, regulatory and political developments that can affect their practice in New York State. Here is a brief summary:
- There were no bills that passed both houses with a harmful impact on MLMIC’s policyholders or operations.
- We were able to introduce legislation in both houses to create a strong affidavit of merit and allow for complete disclosure of expert witnesses in medical malpractice cases.
- A bill to codify and expand the ability of insurers to deliver policy documents and all transaction notices electronically to policyholders passed both houses.
- MLMIC worked with our healthcare partners on legislation related to medical malpractice peer review and strict confidentiality and immunity protections for a proposed maternal mortality review board.
The 2018 NYS legislative session adjourned on June 21, and the Legislature is not scheduled to reconvene until January 2019. However, the election for all statewide offices falls on this year’s calendar, which makes for a busy political season just the same. The next edition of The Albany Report will include information on these races and campaigns.
For over 40 years, MLMIC has been committed to meeting the liability insurance needs of physicians, dentists, hospitals and other healthcare professionals. As a core part of its mission, MLMIC is, and always has been, a strong advocate for the healthcare community and has effectively lobbied for legislative and regulatory reform to address those issues that continue to impact healthcare professionals. The Albany Report is intended to enhance this advocacy.
