Strategies for Patient Safety: Cancer Prevention Awareness and the Reality of Diagnostic Risk

Our latest Strategies for Patient Safety explores the critical intersection between cancer prevention awareness and the persistent challenge of diagnostic risk in ambulatory care.
MLMIC and Candello’s analysis of 6,544 general medicine liability claims from 2014 to 2023 highlights the critical challenge of diagnostic failures in ambulatory care. The study reveals that nearly half of these cases (46%) stemmed from missed or delayed diagnoses, with neoplasms being the most frequently cited issue. Given that primary care clinicians often serve as the first point of contact for evolving symptoms, these findings emphasize that timely screening and intervention are essential to reducing the high-severity injuries and fatalities often associated with diagnostic gaps in cancer care.
