Open Bar: MLMIC’s Commitment to Continuing Medical Education
MLMIC has a proud tradition of offering New York-specific continuing medical education (CME) to insured policyholders and has done so for over 40 years. MLMIC’s CME program began in 1984, as co-sponsored live lectures presented to physicians participating in the company’s Voluntary Attending Physician (VAP) Program. MLMIC received provisional accreditation to award CME credit from MSSNY in 1993. MLMIC has been fully accredited since 1995, providing CME for physicians.
The goal of the education programs is to enhance medical care by maintaining, augmenting and updating learners’ medical knowledge, skills and behavior, in order to facilitate the delivery of medical care to their patients. An additional goal includes the reduction of potential liability through risk management, loss prevention and improved patient care.
Proactive Risk Management Courses
The most popular programs currently offered by MLMIC are the Proactive Risk Management (Regulation 124) CME courses, which are currently between six and nine hours in length, and are available in an Internet-based enduring material format. This allows learners to complete the course at their own pace and at a time and place that are convenient for them.1 As per the regulation, the basic course and follow-up program must contain a five- and three-hour lecture, respectively, as well as a home study project and self-review survey.2 These components are combined into the online course and several learning formats are used to keep the learners engaged. They include recorded, lecture-based modules; pre- and post-test questions; case study analyses; a corrective actions section; and a self-review survey. The programs are produced in-house, by the MLMIC risk management staff, with the assistance of other MLMIC departments. Depending upon the program, MLMIC physician policyholders may qualify for a 5%-12% discount premium credit on their primary insurance policy for two successive policy years with satisfactory completion of a proactive risk management program.3 Additionally, these programs may enable physicians to qualify for participation in the Section 18 excess medical malpractice insurance program, and earn CME, Maintenance of Certification (MOC) or continuing certification credit.4 MLMIC’s proactive risk management programs are also currently available to insured dentists, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, other allied health professionals and other non-clinical office staff at no cost.
Live – Continuing Medical Education
MLMIC offers a diverse array of learning opportunities, and MLMIC understands the value of “live” webinars and in-person learning. Policyholders and clients may request live programming on a variety of topics, which can be customized and presented by professionals with a medical, legal or risk management background. MLMIC uses its fifty years plus of knowledge and experience to help educate insureds on anything from office and medication safety to use of social media, medical record documentation, appropriate follow-up and more.
CME-only Online Courses
MLMIC policyholders and staff also have access to MLMIC’s CME-only catalog, which allows learners to gain valuable continuing medical education in topics specific to New York. A wide variety of MLMIC-exclusive risk management courses are available for completion online anytime at no cost. Physicians completing these courses will earn AMA PRA Category 1 CreditTM. Non-physicians will receive a certificate of completion. Some of those courses include the following titles:
