Talk Studio: On Being a Defendant in a Medical Malpractice Lawsuit

MLMIC Insurance Company is proud to present the inaugural episode of Talk Studio, a new video series on important and trending issues in professional liability, healthcare law and risk management. The debut of MLMIC’s Talk Studio features an important conversation on medical malpractice lawsuits from a defendant’s perspective.

Here, in Episode 1, Al Anthony Mercado, Esq., of Fager Amsler Keller & Schoppmann, LLP, counsel to MLMIC, and Dr. John Lombardo, MLMIC’s Chief Medical Officer discuss what it’s like to live through the ordeal of being a defendant in a medical malpractice lawsuit.

Dr. Lombardo shares his challenging experience being sued for medical malpractice as a practicing physician. He details the entire process and its emotional toll, from the daunting moment he received legal papers to the immense relief that accompanied a final verdict ruling in his favor.

“It’s a dark secret,” explains Dr. Lombardo. “In our profession, we tend not to talk about [malpractice lawsuits] in the locker room or in front of each other at parties, and I want to bring that subject out of the shadows, into the open.” He says he hopes that normalizing communication on medical malpractice lawsuits will help fellow physicians in similar situations.
