Claims Specialist Trainee
MLMIC Insurance Company is based in New York state and has specialized in providing professional liability for NY physicians since 1975. After operating independently and as a mutual insurance company for most of its existence, MLMIC was purchased by Berkshire Hathaway in the fall of 2018.
We continue to be the most significant writer of professional medical liability insurance in the State of New York. We provide insurance for physicians, dentists, and hospitals. The Claims Specialist Trainee position will allow the trainee to gain exposure to multiple functions within the department and obtain valuable skills and experience.
Responsibilities:
- Responsible for initial assessment – gathering and analyzing documents including pleadings and medical records.
- Responsible for case evaluation including coverage and reserve analysis, liability and damages assessment. Retaining medical experts.
- Responsible for litigation management – collaborating with defense counsel to develop defense strategies.
- Participation in case resolutions, conferencing, mediations, and trials. Communicating with insured professional as needed.
- Processes billing, including adjudication of vendor invoices.
- Limited travel to court proceedings is required. Applicant will be required to reside within 20 miles of assigned work area. Must be able/willing to travel for court appearances.
- Perform other responsibilities as needed.
Education and Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree required. Degree in Healthcare preferred.
- Knowledge of Insurance in Paralegal, Nursing, and Healthcare preferred.
- Preferred license: Casualty & Property Adjuster. (The Candidate will have two years to prep for the exam).
- 1 years of related experience.
- Knowledge of Professional Liability Insurance preferred.
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Organizational and planning skills are required.
- Hands-on experience and strong aptitude with Microsoft Office Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint
