Case Studies: Impact of Inadequate Staffing and Deviations From Standard of Care
The November 2017 edition of Case Review – a review of case studies for MLMIC-insured physicians and facilities – is now available for reading online. There are two case studies in this issue:
Case Study #1: “Systemic Failures and Poor Care Lead to Death in the PACU.” This case highlights the results of multiple deviations from the standard of care.
Case Study #2: “Inadequate Staffing Leads to Post-Treatment Disaster.” Unsafe patient conditions make a physician’s case indefensible.
Both case studies are followed by a legal and risk management perspective.

Did you know that – unlike other carriers in New York’s medical malpractice marketplace –MLMIC’s entire underwriting and claims process is overseen and guided by physician peer review? Whether reviewing a prospective policyholder’s new application or performing a review of an existing policyholder’s underwriting record, physician peer review is the cornerstone of MLMIC’s underwriting philosophy.
MLMIC’s Winter 2017 Case Review includes a case study in which poor communication and failure to communicate contributed to a delay in the diagnosis of breast cancer.
To reduce the potential liability related to negligent credentialing, MLMIC encourages all hospitals and healthcare facilities to ensure both rigorous credentialing and thorough follow-through of all steps in the process.
