Use Diligence in Prescribing the New Oral Anticoagulants

Over the course of the past several years, new oral anticoagulants (NOACs) have become available as a treatment alternative to warfarin.  A number of these NOACs are the subjects of routine advertisements. While NOACs are considered to have certain advantages to warfarin, they also have disadvantages.

MLMIC believes it is important for providers to be aware of the potential risks of prescribing any medication. In addition to providers understanding the risks, benefits and alternatives of prescribing any medication; they must fully explain these risks, benefits and alternatives to patients when making treatment decisions. Patient compliance with NOAC use is vital, and providers must take this into consideration when prescribing them and provide periodic monitoring as indicated.

Information regarding the administration of medications is readily available at PDR.net. To read about the risks and benefits specific to NOACs, please consult “New Oral Anticoagulants: Monitoring and Counseling Patients.”
